September is Leukaemia Awareness month

Staying on the theme of wellbeing, one of our members was diagnosed with Acute myeloid leukaemia and is keen to raise awareness of this condition. His was diagnosed after months of being ill and quite often even GPs struggle to spot the symptoms.

Leukaemia Care provides vital support, information and advice to anyone whose life has been affected by a blood cancer. They not only support patients but carers and families too whose lives are impacted when someone they know receives a diagnosis.

Fit The Bill with Essex Police

Fit The Bill
This is a letter that has been recently circulated to the Chelmsford and Southend Branches of NARPO about the Fit The Bill Campaign. Sue Heaton, the Chelmsford Branch Secretary, has asked for it to be included on the website.
Hello,

I’d like to introduce myself as the Internal Communications Manager at Essex Police. I’d really like to work more closely with you, as NARPO district leads because I believe we have a joint ambition to promote and support policing in Essex, and the people who work or have worked for the force. By sharing our messages I think we can increase the trust and credibility of policing in our local communities and help keep people safe.

You may have seen our recent recruitment campaign #FitTheBill, and you may even have liked some of our social media posts? Would you be interested in sharing the #FitTheBill campaign with your NARPO networks? We’ve got some really fantastic images and videos that have already been successful in driving more people to apply for the new roles in Essex Police. Many of our police officers (of all ranks!) have got behind this campaign and shared the story of their journey in policing, illustrating the various backgrounds and opportunities that are available in the county.

Our campaign is obviously very timely with the news of the government uplift of 20,000 new officers. We’re growing, regardless of the government’s investment, as our officer numbers are at a four-year high with more than 3,000 full-time equivalent police officers, as well as the fastest growing Special Constabulary in the country with more than 500 Specials.

At our HQ tomorrow, we are hosting an extraordinary Passing Out Parade, which will see more than 70 probationers celebrating the start of their new career with the force. As this is such a clear demonstration of growth in policing, the BBC and Crimewatch Roadshow have chosen to film the event and feature us in upcoming programmes.

It’s a really exciting time for Essex Police, and a really worthwhile campaign. I hope you agree! And I hope you find something within the campaign to share with your networks. If you’d like some content from the Passing Out Parade as well, please let me know. If you have any questions, or need any more information, don’t hesitate to get in touch.

Kind regards,

Elizabeth Bull

Welfare Visits Required

Our welfare officers are working very hard to continue supporting members who are struggling through ill health and are currently actively engaging with seven cases. A request has been made for members to undertake occasional visits in relation to the two members below, who would value the occasional visit from old friends and colleagues for a catch-up.

It would be great if some of you would volunteer to visit as I am sure it would give the members a boost to interact with colleagues and share stories. Whether you know the members or not, or just live in the same area please try to find some time to support the exceptional work our welfare team perform by offering to visit.

  • John Emmerick who lives in the Saffron Walden area.
  • David Smith ex PC 754 retired at Clacton in 2002. Now lives in the Witham area.

If you would like to visit either John or David please give Anne Walker a call on 07540497344. She will then share contact details with you. Visits such as these are an important part of NARPOs role and thank you all for any assistance you can give.

Police into Private Sector – TV opportunity

This message was originally posted by Angela Hackett on Linkedin. Angela is Professional Development and Performance Specialist – Career and Executive Coach and Counsellor with Police into Private Sector – PIPS.

I was called this morning by Lauren Hall from ITV news. Lauren is looking to speak to officers who have left policing mid-service. I have pasted her message below should you wish to contribute.

Warmest to all

Angela

Hi there

Good to speak to you just now. As mentioned, I’m working on a report for ITV’s regional news programmes about police morale and the numbers of officers leaving the profession altogether.

The piece will include figures and look at reasons why officers are leaving – low morale, lack of support and concerns about physical and psychological welfare etc.

We are keen to speak with a former police officer who can tell us why they left and some of the challenges they faced while on duty. I wondered if you could put us in touch with someone who would be willing to talk about their experiences (the interview can be done anonymously if preferred).

We are aiming to do the interview early next week so we would be keen to confirm in the next day or so. If they are able to help, I can be reached on lauren.hall@itv.com or 07824334236.

Thanks again for all your help and please don’t hesitate to contact me if you need any further information.

Best wishes

Lauren

Tower of London Celebratory Event

Tower of London Celebratory Event

Tower of London Celebratory Event

In 1919 The National association of retired Police Officers was formed to represent the views of retired officers and safeguard the rights of members promoting measures for their welfare and pensions.

I am honoured to have taken over the role of Secretary for the Chelmsford Branch of NARPO in this historic year 2019 and to have been part of the Celebrations.

On Thursday 13th June, a special celebratory dinner was held at the Tower of London to mark NARPO’s 100 year anniversary. Members from most branches across the country attended the event which included a drinks reception and four-course dinner.

The Chelmsford branch was represented at this event by myself and my husband Andrew, together with Darren Jones and his daughter Emma.

Like many people attending we decided to make a weekend of it and booked a couple of nights in a hotel close by (Hotel Indigo on Minories which is a bit quirky and highly recommended).

We took a taxi to the venue, however, at that time of the evening it would have been quicker to walk, not to mention a lot cheaper, especially since it dropped us off at the disabled entrance and they wouldn’t let us in that way!

We eventually made it to the correct entrance and were just wondering how we would find Darren and his daughter with over 500 people attending when they just appeared walking towards us from the opposite direction, so we walked in together.

The event was held in the Pavilion, which is essentially a large marquee situated on the Northern side of the Tower. The marquee has been designed to fit in with its historic surroundings, with a magnificent regal interior that opens out onto the Tower’s gardens.

Once inside the venue we were invited to have drinks and canapés whilst looking for our places on the table plan.

Our table (Table 1) was well positioned on the left-hand side with a good view of the stage and lectern, and we noted we would be sitting with the Staffordshire branch. We shared a very interesting evening with this branch with the usual array of ‘funny stories’ being told.

Mr Brian Burdus, the President of NARPO, gave the welcome speech followed by Grace read by The Chaplain to the Police Service of England and Wales. We were then treated to a 4-course meal with a fine selection of wine.

The highlight of the evening was an address by HRH Princess Anne, who has been the Patron of NARPO throughout the centenary year.

She spoke about the value of contributions made by volunteers in local branches and noted how core values have remained pretty much unchanged over the last 100 years. In particular, the safeguarding of members rights, welfare and pensions.

All of the attendees received a commemorative medal which had been commissioned as part of the Centenary celebrations.

Following the meal we wandered around the venue meeting other NARPO members, including those from West Yorkshire who had been sat with our neighbours from Colchester.

I’m pleased to say that Chelmsford Branch managed to last for the duration and we were among the last to leave at around midnight.

It was a pleasure to represent Chelmsford Branch at this memorable occasion and definitely an evening to remember.

House of Lords Celebratory Event

On Wednesday 17th July The Chairman Bob Good and I attended a reception at the House of Lords as part of the 100th Anniversary Celebrations of NARPO.

A pleasant couple of hours at lunchtime were spent chatting with members of other Branches from across the country, whilst enjoying a glass of wine and some canapés on the terrace looking at the Thames and the London Eye.

The reception was hosted by the Baroness Harris of Richmond. Short speeches were given by Baroness Harris, Brian Burdus, NARPO President, Louise Haig MP, Shadow Minister of State for Policing, and Steve Edwards, NARPO CEO.

The event was well attended, including representatives from the Colchester Branch.
