NARPO Chelmsford Weekly Update 9th Oct ’19

Dear Members,

I am back from a relaxing week in Lanzarote and working hard to keep you up to date with Narpo news.

Final Reminder – Get Together this Saturday 12th October

Well, the time is fast approaching for our first official Get Together. Saturday 12th October we are holding a get together at HQ Upstairs bar, Sports Pavillion from 1030-1330, time to meet up with old friends and have a good old chat with some tea, coffee and biscuits. Peter Sharp has been the driving force in trying to arrange this for members and will be doing a talk at the meeting on a subject of interest. It is intended that these meetings will be held quarterly, providing we attract sufficient interest and numbers to warrant it, the next one is being planned for December with Paul Clancy performing some magic.

I urge as many of you who are available to attend, to come along on Saturday and support Peter and NARPO in this new venture. For a long time now some members have been saying what do NARPO do? – nothing seems to get arranged. I have spent months arranging this with Peter and encouraging you all to attend, so please don’t let us down let’s have a great turn out, I’m looking forward to meeting you all.

Even if you are intending watching the rugby then please just turn up late rather than not at all.

Success for Chelmsford Narpo Golfers

I said in the last newsletter I was unsure who had won the golf, I should have had more faith as I am proud to report it was our Branch. Roy Fenning, Chair of the Golf Society, has prepared this short report updating you on there success.”The 3 Branch Trophy Competition” was this year organised and hosted by Southend at the Brentwood Golf Club. The format was Stableford.

Unfortunately, Colchester could only muster 3 players, therefore as they were unable to play as a separate team they were split with 2 playing for Southend and the other for Chelmsford. This made two teams of 9 each.

The course was in good condition but the weather was poor with some heavy rain at the start. The weather cleared and Chelmsford won the day scoring 268 points against 228 points. The individual winner was Chelmsford’s Andy Drane with a score of 40. The Southend captain was second on countback with Errol Green 3rd, both scoring 34 points. The Trophy was returned to Chelmsford, making us the winners 13 times out of its 19 year history.

As I previously mentioned the team are always looking for new members so if you are interested in joining them then please email the Secretary. Nick Padmore

Social Activities

I am still very keen to try to get members involved in group activities they have a common interest and am looking for volunteers to lead on such events.

So if you would like to arrange a ramblers group, fishing event, bowls group, book club or any other activities you are interested in then please let me know and I will advertise on our weekly newsletters and try to encourage members to join the various groups.

Work Opportunity

I have been asked to circulate this from Trust in Blue:
I am writing to you from Trust in Blue regarding new work opportunities available to NARPO members. In addition to our established teams of retired police decorators and tradespeople TIB is now recruiting reliable and helpful relief caretakers to support local schools and care homes.

We are launching a new team in the Chelmsford area and I would be grateful if you could circulate the below information to your members. The new role is well suited to competent DIYers and does not require the same level of trade/decorating experience as our maintenance division, I’m therefore hoping that the flexible opportunities will be suited to many more of your local NARPO membership.

Let me know if you have any questions or require further information at this stage

Kind regards,

Nick

BBC WW2 Testimonies Project

I have been asked to circulate this from Ella Wood, If you can assist in any way please contact her on the details provided:

I am working at the BBC on a project aiming to capture testimonies by people who lived through or fought in World War Two. Naturally, due to the time passed, we are limited on the number of people we can talk to, but we want to speak to as many people as possible in order to gain as wide a perspective as possible of WW2.

We have been talking to societies and associations who are in contact with veterans, but we are keen to find even more people who perhaps haven’t talked about their experience before, so we are reaching out to lots of people to spread the word.

I was wondering if you knew of any local associations or groups which might be able to help us, or if you knew of any veterans or people who lived through the war who might be willing to talk to us about their experience. If they are interested, we would either call them, or send a letter or email, to talk about what they remember, and then if they are keen we would record their testimony.

I would really appreciate any advice you might be able to offer us, and do please feel free to call me if you would like more information..

Many thanks,

Ella

Volunteer Drivers - Rainbow Childrens Charity

Dear Colleagues,

If any of you feel you can assist this worthwhile charity then please contact Sarah on the below details

Kind Regards

Sue Heaton

Secretary – NARPO
Chelmsford Branch

Good Afternoon,

My name is Sarah, I am a Family Support Worker for Rainbow Trust Children’s Charity. We are a national charity, supporting families who have a child with a life-threatening or terminal illness by providing emotional and practical support within both the home and the community.

As well as being a Family Support Worker in the Essex team, I am also in charge of recruiting and supporting our amazing Volunteers. I am contacting you as an organisation to find out whether you would be interested in reaching out to your members, particularly in the Essex area, in the hope of recruiting some Volunteer Drivers. This is one of our roles which we really struggle to fill and I thought that the Ex Police community may possess the skills and confidence that this entails. Many of our families have to travel into central London to specialist hospitals, sometimes this can be once a month, for others it can be as much as 3/4 times a week. As you can imagine, this is not only quite stressful for the family, but is also extremely costly. By reducing the amount of times they themselves have to travel by even one journey can be a huge relief. As Family Support Workers, we provide transport to Families, however, we often have 2 or 3 requests on the same day and unfortunately, have to sometimes turn people down. It would be wonderful if we had a handful of Volunteers who we could call upon in this situation to hopefully help these families.

Thank you for taking the time to read my email, I hope that you don’t mind me contacting you. If you would like to have a look at the charity, please follow the link below and if you have any questions or would like to discuss this further please don’t hesitate to contact me via email or my work mobile 07825601360. I work Wednesday, Thursday and Friday and will endeavour to call you back if I should miss your call.

Vacancy at Bishopscourt – NARPO Essex

Vacancy at Bishopscourt

The Bishop of Chelmsford has a vacancy at Bishopscourt.

1. Driver/Handyman

The Bishop of Chelmsford is looking for a driver/handyman who can work with him on a part-time basis.

It unlikely that the bishop will need driving much more than about twice a week, though there will be some seasonal variation. From September to December 2018 there were also seventy-nine hours of driving duties. The journeys are agreed in advance and are mostly around Essex and East London with occasional longer journeys to other parts of the country. The driver/handyman will also be responsible for:

  • cleaning and maintaining the car and will take responsibility for all aspects of the car’s maintenance and servicing
  • other driving jobs, such as delivering the post, or picking people up from the station.

In addition, the driver/handyman will be expected to come to Bishopscourt for five hours each week to:

  • look after the car
  • be the contact person for contractors and others who come to Bishopscourt
  • ensure a number of small routine maintenance jobs (such as clearing gutters) happen each year
  • be available for other small jobs, such as shredding, wood cutting, managing rubbish, recycling, shopping for supplies and going to the post office as required

Set in four and half acres of land, Bishopscourt is large five bedroomed Edwardian property with a modern office building attached where four people work each day. The property is owned and maintained by the Church Commissioners.

The successful applicant will be given a mobile phone so as contacts can be made in his or her own time. Then it will be their responsibility to liaise with contractors on site, where necessary, and to keep the bishop informed of what is happening, and to liaise with the Property department of the Church Commissioners over all matters to do with the maintenance of the house and garden. This may occasionally require additional hours, which are agreed in advance. The garden itself is looked after by contract gardeners who come in weekly.

The successful applicant will attend the monthly diary planning meeting at Bishopscourt.

The remuneration for this post will be £12.00 an hour

Please send expressions of interest in writing explaining why you might be suitable for these posts to:

The Bishop of Chelmsford, Bishopscourt, Main Road, Margaretting, Ingatestone, and Essex. CM4 0HD.

Brownsword Field Force Recruitment

Dear Member

You have kindly assisted us in the past with our field force recruitment and we are once again looking to strengthen our coverage in the Essex area.

“Brownsword” are a long-established provider of motor insurance investigation services to many major insurers across the UK and our field based enquiries are conducted on our behalf by an extensive field force who work for us on a self-employed basis. The majority of these individuals are from a Police background, as this allows them to continue to utilise the unrivalled skill base which they have built up over many years.

The type of enquiries which our field force undertake includes interviewing drivers/witnesses/police officers etc in relation to road traffic accidents, preparing evidence-based statements and the production of locus reports (including a sketch plan & photographs of where an incident has occurred).

Due to continuing growth we are now looking to strengthen our coverage in a number of key areas including Southend on Sea, Basildon and surrounding areas. It would be greatly appreciated if you could circulate this email to your members, requesting that if they are interested in learning more, in the first instance they should email me a current CV to sean@brownsword.com

We are particularly interested in hearing from any of your members who come from a CID background, as this is the experience preferred by our Dedicated Fraud Unit”.

I would like to take this opportunity, in advance, to thank you for your assistance, it is greatly appreciated.

Kind

Sean
