NARPO Chelmsford Branch Newsletter March 2019
NARPO Chelmsford Branch Newsletter March 2019
Much has happened since I last wrote to you in December. I am pleased to report that we received a terrific response to my appeal for prospective new Committee members and this will help secure our future. The following have already been co-opted to the Committee and will put themselves up for formal election at our AGM in April:
- Sue Heaton (Branch Secretary)
- Andy Drane (Branch Treasurer and Welfare Officer)
- Anne Walker (Welfare Officer)
- Gary Sanderson (Newsletter Editor and Website Manager)
Your Committee has already benefitted from their membership and I extend a warm welcome to them all.
Gary has brought our website (www.narpoessex.com) up to date and is publishing this Newsletter, well done.
The AGM will be held at 2000 hours on Monday 15 April at the Essex Police Sports & Social Club (behind the Essex Police College), off St. Margaret’s Road, Chelmsford, CM2 6DT. I would like to encourage all members to attend and look forward to seeing you there. If any additional members would like to stand for election to the Committee or for any of the designated officer posts, it would be helpful if you could notify me by Monday 1 April. You can email me at NARPO Chelmsford Chairman or by post to 78 Lime Walk, Chelmsford, CM2 9NH
The following current Committee members have announced they will not stand for re-election this year – Ripple Mackman, Roy Scanes and Walker McClure. On behalf of the membership. I would like to thank them all for their loyal service and to wish them well for the future.
I am also indebted to Tim Stokes for taking the lead on various proposals to celebrate NARPOs 100th Anniversary and other social arrangements. You will find Tim’s report later in this Newsletter.
The NARPO Annual Conference this year will be held in September, at Southport, and your Branch will be represented by Sue Heaton and myself. Anne Walker and Tim Stokes are scheduled to attend the Regional Meeting in Leatherhead on 13 April.

NARPO Newsletter – March 2019… (Gary Sanderson)
Welcome to the March issue and this being my first after taking over this responsibility. I thank Bob for his input above.
Before I introduce myself, I would like to formally welcome the following new committee members and look forward to working alongside them and the existing members.
I am pleased to welcome:-
- Sue Heaton – Chelmsford Secretary (Elect)
- Anne Walker – Chelmsford Welfare Officer (Elect)
- Andy Drane – Chelmsford Treasurer and Welfare Officer (Elect)
As for me joining the committee and by way of introduction here is a very short bio of my police career and role post-retirement.
I joined Essex Police in 1984 as a cadet and was very excited to be part of the police family that I still feel part of today even after retirement. When I was old enough to enter the big bad world without the need of an appropriate adult (Some say that day never came!) I was posted to Epping (a very nice place back then) for my probation period before being moved to Harlow on completion (not such a nice place). Here I stayed until 1991 when I undertook a basic firearms course with a view to joining the Force Support Unit (FSU) and having successfully completed this was posted to Stansted Airport as part of the routing policy at the time for FSU.
After a short stay here, I was posted to the FSU in 1992 where I remained until retirement in 2016 with a spell in Weapons training as an Instructor thrown in for good measure. On retirement together with my business partner I set up a Security provider and Training company called Fortis Services Ltd using all my transferable skills – www.fsl-security.co.uk
I have recently taken a place on the NARPO – Chelmsford Branch committee as the newsletter editor and website content manager and on that note, if anyone would like to add or indeed inform members about events, subjects of interest or perhaps helpful advice please feel free to email me at Gary for inclusion. Which brings me on nicely to the first point that I would like to bring to your attention.
As part of the NARPO centenary celebrations that are being planned for this year, it has been decided to hold an evening event at the prestigious location of The Tower of London. This event will consist of a 1 hour cocktail reception, followed by a three-course dinner with coffee and petit fours, cheeseboard and all-inclusive wine, bottled beer and soft drinks. The event will be held on Thursday 13th June 2019 and will start at 6.30pm with the cocktail reception. Dinner will be served at 7.30pm and carriages will be at midnight.
NARPO Chelmsford Branch has managed to secure 2 sets of 2 tickets (four in total) which we intend to provide to the members free of charge a free prize draw to be held at the Annual general meeting at HQ on Monday 15th April 2019 (Please note that travel costs and accommodation if required are not included)
To be eligible for this draw you will need to email me your expression of interest and full details to Gary – Good luck all that enter!
On a separate note, for those of you that are not aware retired police officers are entitled to apply for a Blue light discount card. This is a discount scheme aimed at Blue light / Emergency services and covers a complete range of products and services to which various discounts are applied. If you are interested in this or just would like more information please go to www.bluelightcard.co.uk
I make use of this on a regular basis to make savings to my poor pension fund and have recently used it to good effect when booking my next Caribbean cruise due to depart in January 2020. In the words of a well-known retail store ……………..”Every little helps”
As Bob has stated above the date of the annual general meeting (AGM) is confirmed as Monday 15th April 2019 and will start at 8pm. Please attend if you can as it would be really good to see you there and on a personal note be good for me to see some, dare I say old faces again.
The NARPO – Chelmsford branch committee is dedicated to assist you the members and will be there to support you in your individual needs. Please do not hesitate to contact any one of us if you think we can be of assistance to you.
Until the next time, please stay safe and healthy and in the words of a not to be mentioned previous senior officer of mine whilst I was serving on the FSU ………… “Watch your 6 !”
