NARPO Chelmsford Update 14 May 2020

Dear Members,

Our Branch website is at www.narpo.org/branches/chelmsford
You will find lots of information about the Branch including the latest newsletters and updates as well as details of forthcoming events. You can also link to the main NARPO site which has a wide range of useful information.

Coronavirus Assistance

I hope you are all keeping well during these difficult times, just a reminder that we are here to help if you are isolated, vulnerable or just in need of a chat. Our welfare officers have been doing a sterling job in contacting all our widow members to check on their general welfare and offer assistance, but we are also aware there are others who may be alone and in need of some support. So please don’t hesitate to call/contact us if you need anything.

One of our members who lives in America contracted the disease and was hospitalized. He is now out of hospital and recovering well and is happy to talk to anyone about his experience who is worried or believes they have symptoms. Our welfare officer Anne Walker has spoken with him on a video conference call and is now much better informed about the condition and symptoms, so if you are concerned then let me know and I can put you in touch with those who can advise and help you.

NARPO Chelmsford Update 30 April 2020

National Police Memorial Day – Cancellation

Please find attached here a newsletter from NPMD informing of the cancellation of this year’s event.

Get Together 6th June 2020 and Simply Stride Masterclass – Cancellation

Regretfully taking account of the current situation and the slight easing around lockdown, I have taken the decision to cancel the above event. The next review of the restrictions will not be until the end of May and I don’t feel the situation will sufficiently change for us to safely hold this meeting.

We were due to take a break over the summer period prior to recommencing the ‘Get – Togethers’ later in the year.

Hopefully, the situation will have improved by then and we have booked HQ for Saturday 17th October 2020 to restart the meetings, so please note this date in your diary’s. It is hoped that Geoff Markham will speak at this meeting. His talk will be about a young Essex man killed in the First World War whose story remained undiscovered for nearly a century. It is then almost accidentally stumbled over, thoroughly researched and has since had remarkable ramifications. An Essex school and a village church in central Essex are critical stops along the way to understanding a story which, is at least the equal of that told in the current film “1917”.

Another member also suggested a discussion on The White House Farm murders following the recent TV dramatisation of this incident and hopefully, we can incorporate this at the meeting.

We are keen to build up a list of members who are willing to talk on subjects at these meetings, so if you have an interest and wish to present to the group or have a debate at one of the meetings, could you please let me know so we can compile a list and advertise prior to the events.

I will remain in touch with Karen from Simply Stride and hope to reschedule the masterclass albeit I may wait for some better weather next year before booking.

Cenotaph Parade and Service 2020

The Royal British Legion is planning to hold the Ex-Service and Civilian Contingents attending the Parade and Service at the Cenotaph, Whitehall, on Remembrance Sunday, 8th November 2020. This will be subject to any Government restrictions due to COVID-19. Further information is available from the Royal British Legion website

British Legion

As last year, NARPO HQ applied to the Royal British Legion to send a contingent of Thirty-Six (36) members, to take part in this unique national event, in the heart of London.

Due to heightened security measures, the Metropolitan Police need to conduct individual security checks on all participants. Therefore, basic personal information will need to be provided in advance for each applicant.

Ticket holders will need to bring both photographic ID and a document showing proof of address with them for access to Horse Guards Parade via the staffed Police entry points on the day.

Our Branch can nominate three people to attend. This will be on a first-come basis, so if you would like to take part in this event, please email me at EssexChelmsford@narpo.org, no later than 20th July 2020 to enable me to put forward our nominations. Please provide me with the following details if you are requesting attendance.

Title/Rank
First Name (this must be the name on photo ID)
Last Name
Date of Birth (please use the format DD/MM/YYYY)
