Dates of next meetings and Get Togethers

Saturday 21st March 2020 – Widows Coffee Morning at HQ Sports Pavilion

An informal gathering for widows to meet and have a chat with light refreshments

Dear Members,

It is with regret that we have had to make the difficult decision to cancel the widows coffee morning which was due to take place next Saturday 21st March due to the coronavirus risk. This has been done purely as a precautionary measure so we do not put any of our members under unnecessary risk, by associating with others at this uncertain phase of the virus.

We will continue to monitor the advice and changing developments as they occur and as soon as we feel it is safe to hold we will organise another date.

I am sure many of you will be disappointed but we feel this is the right action to take at the moment

Saturday 4th April 2020 – Get Together at HQ Sports Pavilion

Our speaker will be Geoffrey Markham, who I am sure many of you know well.
Geoff’s talk will be about a young Essex man killed in the First World War whose story remained undiscovered for nearly a century. It is then almost accidentally stumbled over, thoroughly researched and has since had remarkable ramifications. An Essex school and a village church in central Essex are critical stops along the way to understanding a story which, to his mind, is at least the equal of that told in the current film “1917”.

Monday 20th April 2020 AGM – Annual Genera Meeting at HQ Sports Pavillion

All members are invited to this very important meeting where the future of the branch will be discussed and activities planned, I would urge you to attend and bring some ideas, light refreshments will be provided. If you intend coming please email Brian Ladd (our membership secretary) who will send you an agenda.

Saturday 6th June 2020 at HQ Sports Pavillion

Our usual Saturday morning get together will be held, speaker to be notified at a later date. Simply Stride will be holding a masterclass following the meeting at 12.00hrs, which will be funded by the branch so its free for you to attend. This is not a gym workout, but a light exercise class aimed at enhancing your well being and fitness and I think will benefit members. Approximately 30 people can attend the class so please email me on if you are intending coming. This will be on a first come first serve basis due to the limited numbers. A few have already registered so please book in.

Friday 31st July 2020 at 2pm for 2.30pm – The Essex Police Pensioners Garden Party

On behalf of the Chief Constable, B J Harrington, I am pleased to announce that this year’s annual Pensioners Garden Party will be held at the Essex Police Sports Association Pavilion, Police Headquarters.

NARPO has again generously offered to sponsor this event, which means there will not be the usual £5 admission fee.

In addition to enjoying the traditional afternoon tea whilst meeting former colleagues and renewing old friendships, you will have access to the club bar throughout the afternoon.

This year’s event will be held in conjunction with our Big Family Weekend and you are welcome to stay on into the evening. We have lots of events planned for all the family over the weekend which are free for all our members, families and friends.

Parking for the Garden Party guests will be available on the sports field adjacent to the Pavilion

If you wish to attend please send an email to Sam Barkway completing the questions below as soon as possible. If you have any queries please contact Sam Barkway (EPSA Club Steward) on this e-mail address.

Latest on Coronavirus from Public Health England

I am sure you are all aware of the latest regarding Coronavirus but I thought I would include the latest guidance. If any members are concerned then please follow the guidance. At present we have not cancelled any of our meetings or get-togethers but will be closely monitoring the situation and you will be updated if things change.

The advice for anyone in any setting is to follow these main guidelines.
  1. The most common symptoms of coronavirus (COVID-19) are recent onset of a new continuous cough and/or high temperature. If you have these symptoms, however mild, stay at home and do not leave your house for 7 days from when your symptoms started. You do not need to call NHS 111 to go into self-isolation. If your symptoms worsen during home isolation or are no better after 7 days, contact NHS 111 online. If you have no internet access, you should call NHS 111. For a medical emergency dial 999.
  2. Wash your hands more often than usual, for 20 seconds using soap and hot water, particularly after coughing, sneezing and blowing your nose, or after being in public areas where other people are doing so. Use hand sanitiser if that’s all you have access to.
  3. To reduce the spread of germs when you cough or sneeze, cover your mouth and nose with a tissue, or your sleeve (not your hands) if you don’t have a tissue, and throw the tissue away immediately. Then wash your hands or use a hand sanitising gel.
  4. Clean and disinfect regularly touched objects and surfaces using your regular cleaning products to reduce the risk of passing the infection on to other people.

At the current time and based on our understanding of what is known of COVID-19 and other similar respiratory viruses, it is likely that older people and those with chronic medical conditions may be vulnerable to severe disease. As more information emerges, recommendations may change.

Stay at home Guidance

This advice is for people with symptoms of coronavirus (COVID-19), including those with a diagnosis of coronavirus (COVID-19) infection, who must remain at home until they are well.

The main messages are:

  • if you have symptoms of coronavirus infection (COVID-19), however mild, do not leave your home for 7 days from when your symptoms started (see ending isolation section for more information)
  • this action will help protect others in your community while you are infectious
  • plan ahead and ask others for help to ensure you can successfully stay at home
  • ask your employer, friends and family to help you to get the things you need to stay at home
  • stay at least 2 metres (about 3 steps) away from other people in your home whenever possible
  • sleep alone, if possible
  • wash your hands regularly for 20 seconds, each time using soap and water, or use hand sanitiser
  • stay away from vulnerable individuals, such as the elderly and those with underlying health conditions, as much as possible
  • you do not need to call NHS 111 to go into self-isolation. If your symptoms worsen during home isolation or are no better after 7 days, contact NHS 111 online. If you have no internet access, call NHS 111. For a medical emergency dial 999
