NARPO Chelmsford Weekly Update 24th Nov ’19
Not too much to report this week but didn’t want you to think I had forgotten about you.
7th December Chelmsford NARPO Christmas Social
The date is fast approaching for our next get together which will take place 10:30 – 13:00hrs on Saturday 7th December in the upstairs bar at Essex Police Sports and Social Club HQ.
We have member, Paul Clancy, attending to talk about his interest in magic. Paul is a member of the Magic Circle and will be entertaining us with his tricks. We will be looking for speakers to talk at the next planned meeting on 15th February so please come with plenty of ideas, and Peter Sharp will collate details of those wishing to speak at future meetings, you may have a friend or family member who has an interesting subject they may like to come and present.
This is a great opportunity to get together with your old colleagues for a good old chin wag and of course free mince pies available at this one to tempt you. 😃
So please all show some support for this initiative and come along – If you are intending coming please email me at Sue Heaton so I have a rough idea how many mince pies to supply – or I will be eating them all year and I don’t think my figure needs that!
Your partner/spouse is also welcome to attend if you don’t know until the day if you can make it or not please still turn up if you haven’t previously registered your interest, the more the merrier.
I am unsure if many of you are aware of this association, or are indeed members. This is another great group to join, to keep you in touch with your old friends.
A Brief History of
The Essex Police Comrades’ Association
At a meeting of Superintendents held at Police Headquarters, Chelmsford, on the 14th January 1924, the Chief Constable of Essex, Captain John A Unett, outlined a proposal to form an association comprising pensioners and those members of the Regular Force with fifteen years’ service or more, this has laterally been changed to ten years.
The Second World War stopped many annual functions, including the Old Comrades’. There was an annual luncheon in July 1939, but no more until 1947 – neither was the annual subscription of 2/6d collected during the years 1941 to 1946.
Whilst membership stood at 416 in 1940, it rose to 452 in 1947 when the collection of annual subscriptions was resumed, so it was apparent that the Old Comrades did not intend their Association to die with the war. The 1947 Luncheon was held at Southend, attracted 166 members, and cost £65.
This association is still in existence and you may wish to consider the fellowship available.
They hold two main annual functions, these being a Spring Lunch to which partners are invited and an Autumn Lunch for members only. This year was the Association’s 95th Anniversary – so it is good to know that it is still going strong after all this time!
If you would like to join the Association, please contact Jo Baker via EPSA at the Police Headquarters or by email Jo Baker and she will send you the application form.
