Widows Pension for Life
n our centenary year we are reinvigorating our Widows Pension For Life Campaign. We will be hosting a Parliamentary drop-in reception in May in order to reach Members from both Houses.
We encourage NARPO members to write to their MP to highlight this important campaign. Please find a template letter for members to complete.
Our goal is to achieve parity with widows of former Northern Ireland officers who retain their pension even if they remarry or cohabit.
Celebrating a century
This year marks a significant milestone in NARPO’s history as we celebrate our centenary year. There are events taking place across the country throughout the year from lunches and afternoon teas to black tie dinners. Take a look at the centenary pages of the NARPO website to see what events your local branch has planned.
NARPO’s annual conference will take place in Southport on Friday 6th September 2019. The theme of this year’s conference is wellbeing and pensions. A panel of invited guests will be discussing some of the key issues affected retired police officers with regards to wellbeing and pensions. Panelists include Chief Constable Andy Rhodes, who is the national lead for wellbeing & engagement.
TV licence concession
NARPO, alongside our Later Life Ambitions partners, has written to the Secretary of State for Digital, Culture, Media and Sport to urge the government to continue funding the TV licence concession for over-75s
The letter notes that removing the concession will disadvantage many older people who suffer from loneliness and social isolation and calls on the government to prioritise implementing a revised funding formula that maintains the free TV license.
New regulations come into force
Police and Firefighters’ (Pensions etc) (Amendment) (England and Wales) Regulations 2019 will come into force on 1 April 2019 and make amendments to various instruments relating to pensions payable in respect of police officers in England and Wales and firefighters in England. Provisions are also made to make provision for amendment to Police Federation Regulations.
