Southend Branch Newsletter January 2018

100th Anniversary of the Royal Air Force

This year is the 100th anniversary of the Royal Air Force. IWM Duxford will be celebrating that anniversary as well as commemorating the Battle of Britain with an air show on Saturday 22 September 2018.

Both of us attended last year and it was a fantastic day that literally brought tears to our eyes, particularly during the fly past of the Lancaster bombers, Spitfires and Hurricanes. What a sound!

Your admission ticket will include the opportunity to visit any exhibit that you choose to see at IWM Duxford in addition of course to seeing the flying displays during the afternoon.

Refreshments are available for you to purchase but you may prefer to pack a picnic and bring along your folding chairs. Let’s hope for some nice weather!

We anticipate leaving about one hour after the flying display concludes. At present we do not know when that will be but assume it to be 17.00 or 18.00 hours.

Please note the special deal for carers pushing wheelchairs and youngsters under 16. We are not able to reserve tickets for this event. We therefore need you to pay us so that we can order and pay for your tickets. Tickets sell quickly so we encourage you to book as soon as possible and in any case by the end of March. You will still be able to book later than that so long as we have space on the coach and there are still tickets available.

Southend Branch AGMAnnual General Meeting

Friday 23 March 2018 is the date of our AGM. This will again be held at the Len Forge Centre. A bar will be available and a free light buffet will be provided.

A speaker, Peter Jones a local author has been engaged to address the meeting after refreshments.

Ample free parking is available. Do please make an effort to attend. It is after all your AGM and offers you the opportunity to express any views you may have on how the committee perform on your behalf and of course to be involved in the selection of the future committee. Most of all it is a good opportunity to spend time in the company of old friends.

‘National Memorial Arboretum

On Saturday 30 June 2018 (Armed Forces Day, UK) we have arranged a visit to the ‘National Memorial Arboretum‘. There you will find many memorials, gardens and exhibits reflecting all branches of our armed forces and also the Police Service. We have booked a land train tour of the site (included in the cost) that will help orientate first time visitors and refresh those of you who have visited before. There are good catering facilities for you to purchase refreshments. We have a few places left.

St. Pierre Marriott Hotel and Country ClubSt. Pierre Marriott Hotel and Country Club

We have booked an allocation of rooms at the St. Pierre Marriott Hotel and Country Club for our holiday from 12th to 17th August 2018. If you want to join us and have not yet booked, we will contact the hotel to try and secure accommodation. The hotel is surrounded by 400 acres of beautiful grounds including two championship golf courses. Full details can be found at St. Pierre Marriott Hotel and Country Club. Feel free to contact us if you want more details.

During the holiday we will use two different blue badge guides and take in the Brecon Beacons, The Black Mountains and Wye valley as well as touring Herefordshire. We will arrange a visit to the Royal Mint to see the manufacture and history of our coinage, and take a trip on the river Wye to view Symonds Yat at close quarters. We hope to arrange (included in the cost) a bite to eat at lunch time for each day of the holiday! We hope you find this appealing and we look forward to a week in beautiful surroundings in good company! The cost of this break will be as set out in the newsletter.

We have arranged secure parking for your cars at the Len Forge Centre (LFC), Eastwoodbury Lane, Southend-on-Sea, SS2 6UH, where our trips start. The centre is located next to the mini roundabout at the junction of Eastwoodbury Lane with Whitehouse Road and Snakes Lane. When you first park there we will issue you a small badge that you will be required to display in your vehicle. Please retain the badge for future use. If you do not display a badge you may return to find your car has gained a “ticket”. We may ask you once a year to let us have the details of your car so that we can update the LFC records. You are required to park at the rear of the buildings and parking will be at the driver’s risk. No responsibility for damage or loss etc will be accepted by the centre. You will be able to use the toilets and bar facilities if the centre is open. We pay for your parking and therefore ask that you restrict the number of vehicles you use as much as possible.

Booking Terms & Conditions

Please pay by the date shown in the chart at the rear of this newsletter!

Please, please read and take note of our booking and payment terms and conditions! We still have to chase far too many folk for overdue payments! We set payment dates to match those given to us by service providers (boat companies, hotels and ticket agencies etc.). Without your payment we cannot pay them! Check the payment date for your trip in the right hand column of the chart and ensure we receive your payment before that date. If your payment is not received by the due date we reserve the right to cancel your booking without notice to you. We do not accept cash. Cheques must be payable to N.A.R.P.O. We need a separate cheque for each trip you book and one cheque for your whole group is helpful. If you book for a group of people who insist on paying with separate cheques, you must send them all to us at the same time. As with any commercial operator if you book for others, you are responsible for getting their payment to us. Please write the trip to which the cheque relates on the rear of the cheque using the description in the chart at the end of the newsletter. Please also show the name of the person booking the trip if necessary (e.g. a building society cheque which has no name on it). We do not require a covering letter. If we require a deposit we will tell you in the chart at the end of the newsletter! Remember deposits should always be regarded as non refundable.

If you cancel a booking we may still require you to pay N.A.R.P.O. the balance due if you have not done so by the time you cancel. If you do cancel we will always try to refund any monies you have paid, but we may not always be able to do so if we cannot re-claim the cost or if it will have an adverse effect on the overall costs. All trips include a gratuity for our coach driver. By booking with us you are deemed to have accepted these conditions.

We do not arrange insurance cover for you. If you need insurance for any trip e.g. South Wales, it is your responsibility to arrange the cover!

The stand by system is working well so if there are any trips showing as ‘fully booked’ that you’d like to go on, tell us and as and when any cancellations are received you will be offered an opportunity to take them up.

Lyn and I are more than happy to deal with any issues re the trips, but we’d appreciate not being contacted on Sundays or at an unreasonable time of the day. Before contacting us please read this or past newsletters. You will probably find the information you want there.

If you need to discuss anything not trip related, please contact the appropriate committee member whose details are at the bottom of each page of this newsletter. We only deal with matters relating to the trips we organise.

Kind regards,

Mike Beaveridge &

Lyn Beaveridge
